Description:
Abstract:

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) has developed this 3D geological model of the Dinosaur Provincial Park campground area in Minecraft format to engage with people of all ages as they explore Alberta’s subsurface in a whole new way. This model brings robust scientific information generated from our 3D Geological Framework models into an interactive gaming platform, allowing users to mine through the subsurface and discover Alberta's geology.

This model contains several features to explore within Dinosaur Provincial Park, including

- the Red Deer River,

- buildings (Dinosaur Provincial Park Visitor Center, the Cretaceous Café, and Fossil Houses),

- points of interest (campground site, boat launch, roads, bridge, and look-out areas),

- 5 hiking trails,

- generalized geological units (Quaternary sediments, Dinosaur Park Formation, Oldman Formation, Foremost Formation, and Lea Park Formation), and

- dinosaur bone beds within the surrounding rock for users to find, dig, and explore.

The model is shown using a 2 times vertical exaggeration, and each Minecraft block represents approximately 5 m x 5 m x 2.5 m in the real world.

Use of this Minecraft model requires the installation of Minecraft software to view the model. Installation instructions can be found on our website at http://www.ags.aer.ca/dinosaur-prov-park-minecraft-campground-model.

Purpose:
To bring robust scientific information about the geology of the Dinosaur Provincial Park area, generated from our 3D Geological Framework models, into an interactive gaming platform, allowing users to discover and learn about the geology of Alberta.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
The geological surfaces in this Minecraft model have been generalized and should not be used for local or regional scale geological assessments or evaluations.
Logical Consistency Report:
The Minecraft model consists of 5 m x 5 m x 2.5 m blocks and illustrates the geology of the Peace River area using a 2 times vertical exaggeration.
Completeness Report:
The geological surfaces used in this Minecraft model needed to be generalized in order to fit within the 256 vertical block limit set for all Minecraft models. In addition, the blocks were only able to represent a single type of geology. Therefore, this model should not be used to determine the location or occurrence of geological units in the subsurface at a local scale, or used for local or regional scale geological assessments or evaluations.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Each Minecraft block represents an area of approximately 5 m by 5 m.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: The model is shown using a 2 times vertical exaggeration.

Process Step:
Process Description:
This Minecraft model was created by translating high-resolution 3D geological grids from the 3D Geological Framework into a Minecraft-readable format using the Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) software. This was done by exporting grids of the Geological Framework model from Petrel as Tag Image File Format (TIFF files), which were translated by FME into a point cloud format to be properly scaled and converted into building blocks that Minecraft could recognize and reproduce.
