This GIS dataset depicts the surficial geology of the Wabasca area (NTS 84A/SW). The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.

The data comprise the surficial features for NTS 84A/SW derived from fieldwork and LiDAR, bare-earth digital elevation model data (unpublished) interpretation.
Completeness Report:
The data represent surficial geology interpretations based on Light Detection and Ranging bare-earth data, orthorectified aerial photographs and previously published mapping in the area.

We estimate the accuracy of the surface-feature interpretations to be better than +/- 100 m on the ground, based on informed judgement of the effects of all combined map-production errors. No formal accuracy check verified the interpretation.

Process Description:

Our processes included

1. making a mosaic and relief shading the LiDAR for complete coverage of NTS 84A/SW;

2. clipping Landsat ETM+ scenes 043020_0101_001006 and 043021_0100_001006 to the map area boundary;

3. performing object-based analysis on the Landsat data using the Orfeo Toolbox remote-sensing software, collecting training objects, and classifying peatlands using Landsat spectral properties and LiDAR topographic indices;

4. digitizing non-peatland polygons and line features across the LiDAR image of NTS 84A/SW using ArcGIS;

5. labelling spatial features;

6. checking the quality of the digital file; and

7. proofreading the text.
