This GIS dataset depicts the surficial geology of the Wiau Lake area (NTS 73M/SW) (GIS data, line features). The data were created in geodatabase feature class format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.

These data comprise the line features of Alberta Geological Survey Map 648, Surficial Geology of the Wiau Lake Area (NTS 73M/SW).

Purpose: For query and analysis of the surficial geology of the Wiau Lake area (NTS 73M/SW), in GIS format.

The digital vector data are line features built using Esri's ArcMap 10.8 software. Due to the availability of high-quality, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) bare-earth digital elevation model data (unpublished) for NTS 73M/SW, it was possible to delineate polygons, lines and points that would otherwise be unobservable. Not all adjacent map areas have been mapped using LiDAR; therefore, new feature boundaries have been identified in NTS 73M/SW that do not have a corresponding boundary in all of the adjacent map areas. Consequently, NTS 73M/SW is not fully edge-matched with all adjacent areas. Line features intersect only where intended. The digital vector data may contain detailed features not shown on the map due to scale.
Completeness Report:
The data represent surficial geology interpretations based on LiDAR bare-earth data, satellite imagery, and previously published mapping in the area.

Process Description:

Our processes included:

1. making a LiDAR imagery mosaic for NTS 73M/SW;

2. relief shading the LiDAR digital elevation model (DEM);

3. making a Landsat-8 best pixel composite for the region using multiple Landsat-8 scenes from 2017–2019;

4. importing the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) Wetland Inventory (ABMI, 2021), which classifies peatlands according to their spectral properties and topographic characteristics using a machine learning framework in R statistical software based on a DEM, optical satellite data (Sentinel-2), and synthetic aperture radar data (SAR; Sentinel-1) (Delancey et al., 2020);

5. delineating and digitizing non-peatland polygons and line features across the LiDAR image of NTS 73M/SW using ArcMap 10.8;

6. labelling spatial features;

7. checking the quality of the digital file; and

8. proofreading the text.
