This grid dataset is part of the three-dimensional (3-D) hydrostratigraphic model of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin in the Edmonton-Calgary Corridor, central Alberta. It represents the net-to-gross sandstone ratio distribution within the Paskapoo Formation - Lower Composite Slice of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin. The Lower Composite Slice is one of three distinct geological domains identified in the Paskapoo Formation of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin model.
Characterization of net-to-gross sandstone ratio distribution within the Paskapoo Formation provides information about the geological heterogeneity and potential hydraulic connectivity within the formation for input into a groundwater flow model.
Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Open File Report 2014-10 includes a full description of the process used to produce the net-to-gross sandstone ratio grid.

This grid dataset represents the net-to-gross sandstone ratio distribution of the Paskapoo Formation- Lower Composite Slice. The net-to-gross sandstone ratio values are between 0-1.0. NODATA_value for the ASCII grid is coded as -9999.
Completeness Report:
Creation of net-to-gross sandstone ratio distribution for composite slices in the Paskapoo Formation utilized all available digital downhole gamma-ray logs from oil and gas wells collected after November 1, 2006, where the geophysical logs were run through surface casing and have log coverage to within 20 m of surface.
Water well lithologs were not used in the creation of the net-to-gross sandstone distribution grid. The characterization of the composite slices within ~150 m of the land surface may be improved through the integration of digital gamma-ray logs from oil and gas wells and water well lithologs.

The recorded oil and gas well locations used as data sources to generate this grid are estimated to be within a 10 m radius of their actual locations. The cells of this grid are 100 m on each side and as a result any horizontal positional error has little impact on the accuracy of the grid, considering this is a regional scale grid and not intended for local scale studies.

36 discrete wedge-shaped slices were created through the Paskapoo Formation to divide the formation into three distinct geological domains based on the continuity of coarse-grained materials. The vertical positional error of the net-to-gross sandstone distribution for the Lower Composite Slice in the Paskapoo Formation is a function of the errors in the subset of the slices that make up the composite slice.
Data from oil and gas wells that have errors in kelly bushing (KB) elevation may be included in the incorrect slice, affecting the calculated net-to-gross sandstone distribution of each slice, and consequently, altering the net-to-gross sandstone distribution calculated for the merged slice used to create the three geological domains within the Paskapoo Formation.

Creation of the net-to-gross sandstone ratio distribution for composite slices in the Paskapoo Formation utilized available digital downhole gamma-ray logs from oil and gas wells collected after November 1, 2006. The data from these wells were used as the geophysical logs were run through surface casing and have log coverage to within 20 m of surface. The sections of the digital gamma-ray logs collected through surface casing were normalized to remove the effects of logging through casing. The gamma-ray logs run below surface casing were also normalized and merged into a single normalized gamma-ray log with the cased borehole segments. 3134 normalized digital gamma-ray logs were used to calculate the net-to-gross sandstone ratio for the Paskapoo Formation - Lower Composite Slice.
To calculate the net-to-gross sandstone ratio for the Paskapoo Formation - Lower Composite Slice, all oil and gas well data in the study area were used to define the geometry and thickness of 36 wedge-shaped slices propagated up through the Paskapoo Formation. Using Petra software the net-to-gross sandstone ratio was interpolated for 36 wedge-shaped slices and histograms were created in Microsoft Excel to facilitate comparison between slices. These data were compiled into three main groups. The Paskapoo Formation - Lower Composite Slice merged slices 1-10 and the resulting 21 488 projected picks with x,y,z and net-to-gross sandstone values were imported into ArcMap for interpolation.
