Data Quality Information:
Logical Consistency Report:

The Edson dataset is a tabular type of data consisting of unique records (no duplicates) for each individual well.

Other characteristics:

- all spatial locations were checked for uniqueness;

- each stratigraphic (formation, member and other stratigraphic sub-divisions) or lithological (sandstone, coal, marker) pick is unique;

- all attributes have been assigned values; in some circumstances when the unit is absent the pick quality code assigned is (0);

- all the attributes have well defined domains and were found valid within the domain;

- coal picks followed a strict protocol described in ESR 2007-06;

- picks are consistent with the stratigraphic model and the relative stratigraphic position (no cross-over).

Completeness Report:

The Edson data set was created to provide detail maps for the Edson CBM exploration block. The source of information consisted of selected oil and gas exploration wells. The selected wells meet the following criteria: good geographic distribution, not deviated, adequate geophysical log record (Gamma-ray, density, Induction) and appropriate depth (Battle-Scollard-basal Paskapoo channels stratigraphic interval).

The dataset comprises 28 correlative attributes, 3 formation attributes and 5 lithological attributes that correlate with 28 representative stratigraphic units with extensive lateral correlation, 3 stratigraphic intervals described as formations and 5 lithological categories. Most of the names of the units are new, for instance the names of the sandstone channels. The description of the units and the protocol used for picking the units on the geophysical logs can be found in ESR 2007-06 as associated publication.

A description of the correlative, formation and lithological attributes can also be found in the entity and attribute section of the metadata record and in the tables 'tbl_List_of_Unit_Names', 'tbl_List_of_Formations' and ' tbl_List_of_Lithologies' respectively, within the database itself.

Process Step:
Process Description:

The Edson block dataset represents a new collection of stratigraphic and lithological picks (sandstone, coal and selected markers) reflecting a new sequence stratigraphic model applied to the fluvial succession including the Scollard Formation and the basal Paskapoo channels in the study area.

The dataset describes a detailed interpretation of the considered correlative lithological units (Scollard and Paskapoo individual sandstone channels, Ardley coal sub-zones and individual coal seams, and tonstein strata considered as stratigraphic markers).

The MS Access database is structured in:

a. general well information (WID, geographic coordinates, Kb, etc.);

b. stratigraphic and lithological picks (depth values and associated attributes);

c. reference tables that describe the attribute data;

The picks have depth values of tops and of bases for each stratigraphic and lithological unit. The depth values resulted from the interpretation of Gamma-ray, density, induction and calliper geophysical log records. Criteria applied to the well log selection were: the presence of the Gamma-ray -density-induction combination of geophysical logs and the appropiate depth. The picks were compared with the core observations. The picks were recorded manually into the MS Access database. The errors were identified by running simple statistical methods and during the mapping process. The correction of the errors was made by checking the anomalous values against the log signature.

The data set was processed by queries to extract the desired information for mapping.

Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: coal
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Coal as a particular lithological unit interpreted on the geophysical logs. It represents the generic equivalent of all categories of bright, banded, dull and fibrous coal described on the examined cores in the Edson Block, Ardley coal zone. The concentration in organic matter is 60% - >80%. The coal identification on the geophysical logs refers to the combined information of the Caliper, GR, Density and Induction readings within the same depth interval. When Caliper doesn't show any wash-out, GR ranges <30 - 45 API, Density <1.7 g/cc and all three traces of the induction group show an abrupt shift to the right due to much higher resistivity of the coal unit (especially the deep induction trace departs to the extreme right of about 1000-2000 ohm m2/m). Note: 1) The log record varies with the year when it was performed, the objective of the drilling (not all the logs have the same combination of log traces), the damage of the borehole, the quality of the well logging devise used and the calibration process. The quality of the log record influences the quality of the coal picks. 2) The log resolution is limited by thickness of coal seam smaller than 0.33 m.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: shaly coal
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Shaly coal as a particular lithological unit interpreted on the geophysical logs represents the equivalent of clay or silt in intimate mixture with coal debris or separated in thin and frequent bands of coal as it is described in the examined cores from the Edson Block, Ardley coal zone. The concentration in organic matter is around 60%. The coal identification on the geophysical logs refers to the combined information of the Caliper, GR, Density and Induction readings within the same depth interval. When Caliper doesn't show any wash-out, GR ranges 45-65 API, Density <1.7 - 1.9 g/cc and all three traces of the induction group show a weak shift to the right but stronger than for coaly shale. Note: 1) The log record varies with the year when it was performed, the objective of the drilling (not all the logs have the same combination of log traces), the damage of the borehole, the quality of the well logging devise used and the calibration process. The quality of the log record influences the quality of the shaly coal picks. 2) The log resolution is limited by thickness of seam smaller than 0.33 m.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: coaly shale
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Coaly shale as a particular lithological unit interpreted on the geophysical logs. It represents the equivalent of the siltstone or mudstone units with 40% organic matter fine dispersed or agglomerated in bands as it is described in the examined cores from the Edson Block, Ardley coal zone. The coal identification on the geophysical logs refers to the combined information of the Caliper, GR, Density and Induction readings within the same depth interval. When Caliper doesn't show any wash-out, GR ranges 65-75 API, Density 1.9 - 2.1 g/cc and all three traces of the induction group show a weak shift to the right only as one or two units extension. Note: 1) The log record varies with the year when it was performed, the objective of the drilling (not all the logs have the same combination of log traces), the damage of the borehole, the quality of the well logging devise used and the calibration process. The quality of the log record influences the quality of the coaly-shale picks. 2) The log resolution is limited by thickness of seam smaller than 0.33 m.

Enumerated Domain Value: shale
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Shale is a generic term used in the CBM datasets for defining fine and very fine sedimentary rocks. In this dataset 'shale' represents the mudstone and siltstone units with a low GR response 90-140 API.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: sand
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Sand is the short term for sandstone. Sandstone is a particular lithological unit characterized by medium-grained clastic rock composed of abundant individual particles of quartz and/or lithic fragments (in the studied stratigraphic interval) visible macroscopically. In the examined cores from the Edson Block, Scollard-Paskapoo interval, the sandstone units are lithic with salt-and-pepper aspect, medium to fine-grained, poorly sorted, poorly to moderately cemented containing subangular lithic fragments and quartz. The sandstone units are identified on the log record mainly on the GR trace equivalent to the intervals of very low GR response (~45 API).

Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
'Battle Top' is the short name of the 'Top of the Battle Formation'. The Battle Formation represents a consistent lithologic interval made up of interbedded layers of tonstein, silt and mudstone averaging 10 m thickness. Due to the content in tonstein (which originated in volcanic ash deposited in acidic environments) the GR coupled with Induction record have a particular signature for this lithologic interval such as high GR (140 ->150 API) and significantly low induction record (1.0 - 4.0 ohm m2/m). The top of the Battle Formation is given by the change of the typical log signature of the Battle interval described above, due to the absence of the tonstein beds in the overlying strata.
